Other wood varieties on our property, from which I have created pieces, include Tan Oak (which, despite its common name is not a true Oak), Redwood, California Bay Laurel and various types of Pine. In addition to bowls, I sometimes produce cutting boards, plates and even furniture.
For the these special striped bowls, the block is then cut through and thin strips of Walnut, Madrone or coastal Oak are inserted, glued and held together by clamps until totally set - this process takes multiple iterations and is very time consuming, but the results are worth it.
